Being a Pisces I guess I’m naturally drawn to water. I love all sports that involve water, but I
especially like to fish.  I love fishing of any kind but unlike many people, I fish for the
enjoyment of fishing, not for prizes, trophies or money.

A number of years ago I got tired of fighting the Kansas heat, wind, jet skis and water skiers
that are associated with daytime fishing, and started fishing under the lights after the sun
went down.  Not only do I no longer have to deal with the negatives of daytime fishing, but I
now catch more fish than ever.

After the sun goes down the brisk Kansas winds subside and the lake turns to a sheet of
black glass.  The noise of the jet skis and kids are long put to bed, and the only sounds you
will hear are the frogs and coyotes singing their nightly songs.  It may not be heaven, but it’
s as close as you’ll get in today’s hectic world.

Night fishing requires the use of some type of artificial light.  Most of the fisherman use
submersible halogen lights that create an eerie glow over the dark quiet water, while others
use floating lights and lanterns.  There are times there is so much light being reflected
across the calm water it looks as if small cities have sprung up right in the middle of the
lake.  You can always tell when the fish move in under the lights, because the talk starts
getting louder and louder from boat to boat.  It's comical sitting in the dead quiet of the night
hearing these guys talking it up trying to convince each other they had just caught the
biggest fish of the night.  If it wasn’t "Can’t Talk Now...I’ve got a big Walleye on", it was “Well
why don’t ya slam that damn live well lid a little harder"!  The constant chatter between the
guys keeps everybody laughing and fishing all night long.  And then there's the constant
whine of string being pulled from someone's reel.  It's easy to deceive neighboring boats by
loosening the drag on your reel.  Doing this can make a half pound White Bass sound like a
five pound Walleye.  Add a little chatter to the mix and everyone thinks you're having the
night of your life!  The most fun can come near dawn when all the boats come in to show off
their nightly catch.  Many times the ones who had been talking the loudest have the least to
show for their constant nightly chatter.

There was one night in particular when the fishing gods must have decided it was time to
humble a long time fishing buddy of mine, who normally out fished me on a nightly basis.
We’ve all been there, and we all hate it when it happens to us.  This particular night, we had
set up on a drop off between 16 feet and 20 feet deep.  As usual we set out two
submersible lights, one towards the front chair and one near the back chair.  Since my
buddy was manning the controls at the front of the boat, he had the front chair which left me
manning the anchor and the back chair.  Shortly after midnight the fish moved in under my
light, and I mean right under “my” light.  I was catching a fish every time I lowered my line in
the water.  We're talking a fish every 4 to 5 minutes easy!  My buddy, who was only ten feet
away from me couldn’t get a bite to save his life.  This was pay back time for me!  I
remembered the nightly beatings he'd put on me over the years and the constant chatter I
had to put up with. So with every fish I hooked, I talked a little more and a little louder, “Hey
bud, can’t talk now, I’m busy fighting this big Walleye! “ I could see the steam rising off his
forehead.  He tried changing lures every few minutes, but to no avail.  Nothing he did
seemed to matter!  The fish were suspended in exactly 18 foot of water, and that was
directly below me.  After laughing until I was nearly sick, I ask him if he wanted to come back
and stand next to me. That really set him off and I can’t even write what his reply was to
me!  To this day we both get a good laugh out of that night and as often as possible I like to
remind him of it.  It just goes to show, be careful what you say...because what goes around
will indeed come back around, it’s just a matter of time!

Fishing at night has become one of America’s favorite pastime sports.  It gives us an
opportunity to relax and unwind from our fast paced lives.  So slow down and enjoy life a
little and go fishing, and better yet take a kid fishing, they'll remember it forever...believe me!
